Grasping your opportunities seems like it should be the easiest thing in the world to do, doesn’t it? But for many of us this is not always true.

There are two meanings to the word grasp and, in context of opportunties they are deeply conjoined. Organizations unable to see, (grasp) when a business opportunity exists or understand how one can be created enter into a state of inertia. Inertia leads to stagnation which leads to business death.

Inertia is not uncommon. It is that safe place, a place of comfort and familiarity. That old phrase “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” comes to mind. However, if you assume a paradigm is working “just fine” you aren’t looking for and therefore perhaps don’t notice all the clear markers indicating a change that could potentially close a current opportunity, open a new one or, do both.

As an organization it’s important to focus on comprehensively grasping your position in the market. Conduct a gap analysis: assess where you are now, where you want to be and the distance between the two . Use the tools available to you, (social media, technology, network etc.), to look for and seek out opportunities Learn to recognize their variable components. If an opportunity doesn’t exist then create one.
